Gameplay[edit]

Squad[edit]

Door Kickers allows the player to create a squad of up to ten playable characters, each of which is able customized with classes, weapons, armor, utilities, and gear. Every class has a unique variety of weapons, each of which caters to particular situations and playstyles. As the team completes missions they will level up, both as a squad and individually.

The five choosable classes are Pointman, Assaulter, Breacher, Stealth, and Shield. Pointmen are equipped with just pistols and no primary weapon, but have the highest mobility out of all five. Assaulters can choose between submachine guns and rifles, and Breachers are allowed to have shotguns. The Stealth class allows players to silently dispatch enemies with suppressed weaponry, and the Shield is equipped with a riot shield and a sidearm, with no other gear.

As the team levels up, the player will earn Doctrine points which can be allocated to improve the squad with abilities and perks. Leveling up a character individually will also improve their experience in the field: marksmanship, assault shooting, and field skills will all be upgraded upon leveling up.

Campaigns and single missions[edit]

The game has six main campaigns, each with a different amount of missions. As a player completes a level they will be rewarded with up to three 'stars' depending on their performance during that mission—stars are used to purchase weapons and equipment for the operatives. Single missions are missions not tied to a campaign and are able completed at one's own leisure without having to worry about permanent squad casualties. Door Kickers also features mapping and modding support.

Missions can be of eight varieties: Clear Hostiles, Hostage Rescue, Bomb Defusal, Stop Execution, Protect the VIP, Arrest Warrant, Dope Raid, and Robbery in Progress.

Game mechanics[edit]

The player views the game from a top-down view. Areas not in view of the squad are marked with a blue or black fog-of-war. In some missions there are multiple points at which one is allowed to deploy operatives, allowing for strategical collaboration between the group.

Hence the name, Door Kickers relies heavily on breaching rooms. The game gives players several options in doing so, however. Breaching charges can be used to kill enemies on the other side of the door with relative ease while simultaneously stunning others in the room, or if a more stealthy approach is desired, one can use a spycam to peer underneath the door and see into the room, allowing the player to make a plan. Flashbangs and less-than-lethal Stinger grenades are able to be thrown along with a door kick, stunning or killing any enemies inside. Lockpick Machines to open locked doors and Tazers to subdue terrorists are at the disposal of the squad as well. 'Go codes' can be used to coordinate attacks between operatives.

The team also has the ability to handcuff enemies with arrest warrants, rescue hostages, defuse bombs, and escort and control a VIP.

In some missions, off-map sniper support is offered.

Reviews[edit]

Door Kickers was positively received by critics. Rock, Paper, Shotgun stated 'Door Kickers is a smashing top-down tactical masterclass, with enough missions to shake a nightstick at, randomised enemy placements to add further variety, and a bundled level editor allows devious designers to create their own maps and missions…Door Kickers is a complete package of planning, panicking and policing.'[4] Indie Statik proclaimed that '...It’s a thing of beauty and manages to capture the planning and satisfying execution of more complex strategy games, as well as the gung-ho and the popping-off of growly man in military shooters. (...) It’s probably the best man-shootery game I’ve played in years.' In a Giant Bomb Quick Look,[5] Matt Rorie praised it and said he liked the game quite a bit.

Sequels and spin-offs[edit]

Door Kickers 2 – Task Force North[edit]

A sequel, Door Kickers 2 – Task Force North, was announced on January 17, 2016 and was set to release Q4 2016.[7] However, it was delayed until 2017, then again to 2019, without any news about the game's release. On February 4, 2020, an official trailer was released for the game, and it was announced that the game would launch in Q2 2020 as a Steam Early Access title.[8] The game is to be set in the Middle East and will include improved weapons, equipment, AI, and various new gameplay features in a 3D environment. An improved stealth system was also teased, something that was criticized in Door Kickers.

Door Kickers: Action Squad[edit]

Door Kickers: Action Squad is a spin-off created on behalf of KillHouse Games and another studio, pixelshard. The game was first teased on August 1, 2017 in a comic on the KHG website.[9] A day later, an official trailer was released.[10] The game strays from the series' traditional top-down gameplay in favor of a side-scrolling action game.

Door Kickers is a PC game developed by Kill House Games, eventually ported to mobile devices, that revolves around controlling a SWAT Team from a top-down perspective. While the game itself is often described as a Turn-Based Tactics game, the game features Real-Time with Pause tactics instead, where you will have to pause and issue or change orders very frequently.Door Kickers Dmg To Kill

The gameplay is heavily based around tactics and equipment that real 'Tac Teams' use, and features dozens of different weapons, 5 different unit classes, perks, and a leveling system.

Aside from dozens of self-contained missions, there are also several campaigns, which basically a series of single missions with a loose story connecting them, with casualties and deaths carrying over from one mission to the next.

A spinoff called Door Kickers: Action Squad was released in September 2018. Rather than turn based tactics, the game is instead a side scrolling real-time tactical shooter.

Door Kickers contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Artificial Stupidity: Invoked in a realistic and rather satisfying way. Armed enemies tend to be divided into hiders (whom stay in a single room, often in a corner) and movers (who, once alerted, will try and move to attack your team, or alternatively start patrolling). Enemies seem to enjoy walking through the same door your SWAT team has their guns trained on, and they only rarely seem to take cover. This all ties into the fact that they're untrained and often just junkies with guns of varying type.
  • Alliterative Name: Many of the enemies follow this trope. Examples include Tackdriver Tim, Operator Orville, Grenadier Glenn, Businesslike Ben, Juggernaut Jim, and Jacketed Jake.
    • Action Squad gives us more enemies with Alliterative Names like Double Dave, Blow Up Bart, Griefer Gary, Kurzfelt Kurt, Flamer Finn, and Jacked-Up Jones.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Officers are able to perform the Mozambique Drill when using a pistol at close range, where they will fire two quick shots and perform a headshot with the third. The headshot is a guaranteed kill that ignores any armor, which is extremely helpful in dealing with armored enemies who otherwise may require over a dozen bullets to kill.
  • Cold Sniper:
      Advertisement:
    • While the player will never actually see the sniper in person, his voice tone, while calm and professional, can be off-putting to some people.
    • Parodied in the official web comic, where the officers assume this trope is in play, but the sniper is revealed to a obese man sitting comfortably in his chair and listening to music while surrounded by various types of junk food.
  • Elite Mooks: While most of the game's enemies are outmatched in one-on-one combat even by low-level troopers with no perks and basic equipment, Mooks with assault rifles and body armor such as Operator Orville are a very different story.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Zig-Zagged, depending on the shield's coverage and how tough it is. It's possible for a big shield to protect a trooper from a hail of pistol fire, only for a few shots from a rifle to bring him down.
  • One-Man Army: Mostly averted, but not impossible to invoke. Teamwork, timing, and effective use of equipment is crucial from the beginning, and trying to micro-manage a single trooper and play the game like a third-person shooter will often end in death. However, with Trooper training, perks, and raw player skill, it's possible to do a level with only one Trooper. There's even a challenge specifically rewarding you for it.

  • Required Secondary Powers: In order to use their flashbang grenades most effectively, SWAT troopers have equipment and training that makes them immune.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: Averted. The revolvers available offer no real advantages over the .45 pistols, but have multiple weaknesses such as a lower fire rate, smaller ammo capacity, and inability to pull off the Mozambique Drill. The weakest enemy in the game also uses a .38 revolver that is ineffective in harming your officers.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Downplayed. The names and facial features of several Troopers make it clear that they're female, but the game never makes a big deal of it, so its possible to have a successful Trooper without realizing they're women.
  • Shown Their Work:
    • Officers who use certain handguns (such as ones equipped with compensators) cannot use them alongside the Center Axis Relock perk, as the Center Axis Relock stance puts the handgun close to the user's face and could result in injury due to the compensator redirecting gases.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The revolver toting enemy is named Junkie Harry
    • The description for front-plate only armor includes the quote from Black Hawk Down of the ranger explaining to Grimes that he won't need his rear ballistic plate unless he plans on running away.
    • The steam achievement for unlocking the assaulter class is named 'Now I have a machinegun'
